On March  5th, there was a volleyball game and pizza eating contest for two dollars. Many students attended and had fun. The volleyball game was between the seniors and faculty of Independence. Some players on the faculties side was our principal, Mrs. Hawkins, Mr. Tolliver, Mr. Laraba, and more. On the students side there was Josh Ward, Jay Tucker, Kylie Nelson, and more. They game wasn’t taken too seriously but there were a few good moments and plays between the teams. In the end the seniors won the first game out of three, then the teachers won the second game, and lastly the seniors wan the final game. After the volleyball game between the seniors and faculty we had a pizza eating contest. Students payed 10 dollars to participate in the pizza eating contest. They say the tables up and each contestant had a theme song being played as they walked into the gym. They also all had a “hype man” alongside them to give them moral support when eating the pizza. All the contestants were boys and many of them ripped, or pulled up their shirt when being introduced. Some contestants were Jay Tucker, Logan Thomas, Blake Bane, and quite a few more. When the contest started Jay Tucker took the lead, however when he was almost finished he threw up into the trash can which eliminated him from the race. The boys behind him now knew they had a chance. Logan Thomas ended up winning and as a victory dance ran around without a shirt on a fake proposed to his crush in the stands, she said yes of course. It was an eventful and good day and in my opinion worth the two dollars.

Greystone Volunteer Work https://ihspatriotpost.com/4606/news/greystone-volunteer-work/ https://ihspatriotpost.com/4606/news/greystone-volunteer-work/#respond Wed, 18 Mar 2020 17:12:22 +0000 https://ihspatriotpost.com/?p=4606

On March 2nd, a group of BETA club members went to volunteer at Greystone Elderly for BETA week & volunteer hours. Some of the few students who went were Ema Lily, Emily Suddreth, Nick Taylor, Madi Barr, Chase Bragg, and a few more. They arrived after school that Monday and were greeted by two directors who had snacks sat out for them. It was sat up in a very small community room, it was organized from the most dependent, independent, and those who were sick and needed help the most. The directors divided those who showed up into groups. The groups had about three to four elders in each. They were all organized into 5 separate groups. They did many different activities, one of which was charades. The elders and volunteers had lots of very good conversation, a few examples of some were about grandkids, the future plans, future occupations, and sports. Before the volunteers left they helped clean up the tables for dinner which they have at 4:30 pm. Not only did they get the amazing opportunity to make new friends and spend time with elders but they also got in their volunteer work hours. The volunteers learned much from the elders and enjoyed their experience for the most part, many plan to go back and hopefully visit the ones they met.

National Honor Society https://ihspatriotpost.com/4602/features/national-honor-society/ https://ihspatriotpost.com/4602/features/national-honor-society/#respond Wed, 18 Mar 2020 17:07:37 +0000 https://ihspatriotpost.com/?p=4602

Independence High offers a club called National Honors Society. This is a club for the top students who try and make good grades in school. In order to get into National Honor Society, the students must have at least a 3.6 GPA or above. Once they are in the club, if they drop down to a 3.5 they are put on probation. If they keep that 3.5 GPA steady or improve, then they get to stay in the club; however, if their GPA drops at all, they are kicked from the club. They also have to attend so many meetings for National Honors Society, which they have meetings every Thursday in the little theater. If they don’t attend said meetings, this will result in probation. Community service hours are also required, five each semester, failure to provide hours and proof results in probation also. At the induction there is a ceremony held for National Honor Society members, the girls wear all white and the boys wear button ups with a tie and nice jeans or slacks. The ceremony is candlelit and many members give speeches during. The students fill spots such as president, which is currently Jacob Hatcher, vice president, which is Carter Stiltner and Maddy Branham, and finally the secretary, which is currently Madison Harless. This club is taken very seriously and a great honor to be apart of.

Top 5 of What to Binge Watch on Netflix. https://ihspatriotpost.com/4615/arts-and-entertainment/top-5-of-what-to-binge-watch-on-netflix/ https://ihspatriotpost.com/4615/arts-and-entertainment/top-5-of-what-to-binge-watch-on-netflix/#respond Wed, 18 Mar 2020 16:58:04 +0000 https://ihspatriotpost.com/?p=4615

Netflix has many things to offer for you to watch.   It has a little bit of everything for everyone. Here are some of my personal favorites, and hopefully you enjoy them as much as I have. Number one on the list is On My Block, now this has been out since 2018; it has three seasons, the third of which just came out on March 5th of this year. This is a show about a group of four friends who face many questions, hard times, and things they have to work together to solve. There are many love interests for them as they continue through and it even manages to pull on your heart strings a few times throughout the show.

Number two on the list is Criminal Minds. This show has been out since 2005, and has 12 seasons and counting. This is a show that you don’t necessarily have to watch in order; however, if you do the background information will make more sense to you. The show contains a team of 7 FBI elite profilers who travel to cases, each episode is a new case with a new victim and you get to watch as they solve it. I know it sounds like it could get repetitive, but each case is completely different and usually takes a 180 from where you expected it to go. Also to add on if you watch them in order and follow along with the background story it will pull on your heart strings.

Number three is The 100. This has been out since 2014 and has 6 seasons. The show is about the last surviving humans who live up in space, and they send convicted teen criminals to Earth to find out if it is inhabitable again. Throughout the teens’ exploration they find many things and face many problems. Maybe they are not the only survivors like they believed before, and now they have to learn to live in this new habitat not knowing what to expect. If you like drama filled, action shows then this is highly recommended.

The fourth show is Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This has been out since 2018 and contains three seasons. Sabrina is your average teen, except she’s not, she is half human half witch. You get to watch as she chooses which path she’d like to live down. The path of night or the path of light, which will she choose? Shes faced with many problems that she, her friends, and family have to face. If you’re into mysterious action filled shows then this is the one for you.

Lastly, the fifth show is Shameless. This show has been out since 2011 and has 9 seasons. It’s about a family of 7 who lives in a rundown house and neighborhood. They are all raised by their older sister Fiona due to their father being an absent alcoholic. This is a hilarious show about making the best out of life and having your families back no matter what, even with all the challenges they are faced with they stick together and make it through. These are all my favorites and I hope if you decide to watch any of them you enjoy them as much as I have.

Trump Declares National Emergency https://ihspatriotpost.com/4613/news/trump-declares-national-emergency/ https://ihspatriotpost.com/4613/news/trump-declares-national-emergency/#respond Sat, 14 Mar 2020 16:58:10 +0000 https://ihspatriotpost.com/?p=4613

On March the 13th, Donald Trump declared a national emergency for the US. In doing this he freed up $50 billion for state and local governments to fund and respond to the pandemic. The declaration of national emergency is rarely used in presidency. On top of the national emergency, Trump also gave the Secretary of Health and Human Service emergency authorities to waive federal regulations to give doctors and hospitals “flexibility” in treating patients. From the lack of testing Trump and the government had been receiving harsh criticism. Also on Friday Trump announced that they would be vastly increasing the testing capacity. However Trump also said that he does not want people to get the Coronavirus test if they do not need it. He said “It’s totally unnecessary, this will pass.” As a response to this, New York released that they will begin drive-through coronavirus testing in New Rochelle. During this announcement on Friday they also announced that there were currently 1,678 reported cases of the coronavirus; however, the death toll was only around 41. Now with the national emergency in play, this number could either grow or fund the things needed to make it diminish.

Poachers Kill Rare White Giraffe https://ihspatriotpost.com/4636/news/poachers-kill-rare-white-giraffe/ https://ihspatriotpost.com/4636/news/poachers-kill-rare-white-giraffe/#respond Thu, 12 Mar 2020 17:31:06 +0000 https://ihspatriotpost.com/?p=4636 In Kenya there is an extremely rare breed of giraffe, known as the white giraffe. There were only three known to be alive, but poachers managed to kill two of them. One of the giraffes was the mother and the other was her 7 month old baby calf. Kenya did have the giraffes in a conservation area, but persistent poachers managed to murder them and get away. Kenya does not have a great security system when it comes to poachers and has been trying to adress the problem for years. Sadly there is only one white giraffe known to exist currently and is in a conservation area. The giraffe will most likely be preserved or bred to try and keep the rare species alive. Poachers have driven many animal to extinction over the years, like the wooly mammoth and the Tazmanian tiger. This has outraged many activists and conservationists, who are know calling for better protection of endangered animals.

Military Base in Iraq Bombed https://ihspatriotpost.com/4633/news/military-base-in-iraq-bombed/ https://ihspatriotpost.com/4633/news/military-base-in-iraq-bombed/#respond Thu, 12 Mar 2020 17:27:15 +0000 https://ihspatriotpost.com/?p=4633 On March 11th a American military base in Taji, Iraq was bombed at 7:35 p.m. This attack resulted in the death of two Americans and 1 British national, who were killed by the rockets shot into the base. Twelve other military personel were injured and are currently being attended too. There was a total of 18 rockets shot at the base, from a pickup truck, that had missle launchers on it. The United States government believes the attack to be from Iran, as another response for the drone striking of the highly respected general of the Iran government, Qasem Soleimani. One of the other reasons it is expected to be Iran, is because most terrorists do not have access to the weapons used in the attack. The United States responded with a counter attack, airstriking big militia targets in Irag and Syria. Many believe the troops active in Iraq may start a war and have protested for them to leave, but Trump’s administration has announced no plans to remove the 5000 current active troops in Iraq. New conflicts seem to arrive everyday and if peace talks are not reached soon, there may be a war on our hands.

Trump Bans All Flights from Europe https://ihspatriotpost.com/4630/uncategorized/trump-bans-all-flights-from-europe/ https://ihspatriotpost.com/4630/uncategorized/trump-bans-all-flights-from-europe/#respond Thu, 12 Mar 2020 17:22:46 +0000 https://ihspatriotpost.com/?p=4630 Trump and his administration have decided to not let any flights from Europe, enter the United States among the Coronavirus or COVID-19 outbreak. While this is a good decision and will slow the spread of the virus, it will have big impacts on our economy. A big portion of our goods, come from the European nations and we will not be able to receive them for 30 days. Important CEO meetings will have to be rescheduled and delayed, which could hurt many corporations all around the world. Military and citizens in these areas will have too wait to come home and is going to make many people have to stay in areas they were not planning too. Many people, who have studied the economy are fearing a massive global recession. Along with the travel ban, many events have been canceled in the United States and almost all colleges are moving to online classes. Every college has also stopped their travel abroad programs for right now. Some politicians have quarantined themselves, because of contact with the coronavirus, such as; Ted Cruz and Doug Collins. Many believe these actions to be overkill, but it may help slow the spread and save many lives of people in poor health.

New WiFi Policy https://ihspatriotpost.com/4628/opinion/new-wifi-policy/ https://ihspatriotpost.com/4628/opinion/new-wifi-policy/#respond Thu, 12 Mar 2020 17:15:11 +0000 https://ihspatriotpost.com/?p=4628 The new wifi policy makes complete sense. Many people uses the WiFi for things they don’t need, such as Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, etc. This doesn’t even make sense to me because many people can just download what is on there. I don’t see why people need to use the WiFi if you can just download it. Although I think the punishment for the new WiFi policy is a little extreme. According to many teachers I have talked to, you get at least five days of out of school suspension. Personally I think this unreasonable. Many people use their phone for school. In fact, I am using mine to write this article right now. For me to be able to airdrop it to my teacher,  my device has to be connected to the WiFi. I understand that we have iPads we can use; however, mine honestly does not work that well. I often times do not connect to WiFi with my iPad. It normally takes forever to load, and it is extremely hard to do anything. I have many math assignments that I need to use internet for. I try using my iPad but it honestly takes forever to load. I have to fully shut down my iPad many time before it starts to work normally again, but when I use my phone it almost loads instantly. I don’t know if this is just a problem with my iPad, but I doubt it, because I see many other people who have the same issue. I also know many people who use their computers  for school assignments. Some people just type better and work better with a keyboard. With the policy, however, it could take them a lot longer to get things done. I personally feel like it is unfair to take away the internet from the students who use it properly and for school work only.

The Corona Effects Schools https://ihspatriotpost.com/4609/news/the-corona-effects-schools/ https://ihspatriotpost.com/4609/news/the-corona-effects-schools/#respond Thu, 12 Mar 2020 17:01:23 +0000 https://ihspatriotpost.com/?p=4609

Recently the Corona virus has taken a toll of hysteria on the US population. As the virus grows and spreads, more people become frightened. The school board is now canceling planned field trips due to the threat of the Corona. Many students are upset about this, but teachers and the board are just taking as many precautions as possible. Some schools are even preparing packets and looking into online courses as a precaution to if the Corona comes to us. WVU has now extended their spring break an extra week and will resume with all classes being turned into online classes after the two week period. This if because many students are traveling home to different countries and states for their spring break. The Raleigh County Board of Education released a statement saying if a student or employee is diagnosed with the Corona they must stay home for the recommended 14 day period that they are considered to be contagious. Their doctor must contact the Raleigh County Heath Department of the positive diagnosis. Not only are schools preparing, but also people at home. Places such as Sams, Walmart, and more are selling out of toilet paper, bottled water, canned foods, and more. People are stocking up as preparation for the Corona. The heath department released suggestions on how to stay healthy, clean, and “Corona” free. People are in mass hysteria, don’t panic and stay safe!
